NOTICE: This course and all testing must be completed within 30 days of purchasing this program.
This Online EPA 608 Technician Certification Course with Online Proctored Exams will enable you to obtain your EPA certification in order to work with and handle refrigerants in common air conditioners and HVAC units. EPA 608 Technician Certification is required by Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act for anyone who maintains, services, repairs, or disposes of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants.

If you do not require study materials, or if you are interested in taking all of the EPA 608 certification exam sections online, view our EPA 608 Technician Certification Exam option.
Which Type of Certification Do I Need?
There are four (4) categories of technician certification that this course prepares you for:
TYPE I: To maintain service or repair small appliances.
TYPE II: To maintain, service, repair or dispose of high pressure appliances, except small appliances and motor vehicle air conditioning systems.
TYPE III: To maintain, service, repair, or dispose of low pressure appliances.
UNIVERSAL: Persons, who maintain, service or repair both low and high pressure equipment, as well as small appliances, must be certified as Universal technicians. Technicians must pass the CORE, I, II, & III exam sections to achieve the Universal Certification.
The test contains four sections: CORE, I, II, & III.
Each section contains twenty five (25) multiple choice questions and there is a 30 minute time limit for each. 70% is a passing score.
A technician must pass the CORE exam plus any section(s) they wish to be certified in based on what type of work they'll be doing. For example, CORE + Type II = Type II Certification. Passing all 4 sections earns the Universal Certification.
If a technician fails one or more of the Sections on the first try, they may retake the failed section(s) without retaking the section(s) on which they earned a passing score.
Exam Retakes: Within 30 days of registration, users are permitted 1 retake for the Type II & III proctored exams at no additional fee. After two total attempts or after 30 days, the retest fee is $50 per attempt. Any additional fees required to retake an exam section are not included with your original registration.
Exam content:
The EPA law requires the test to be a closed book exam for Type II and III. The only outside materials allowed are a temperature/pressure chart and a calculator.
Certain personal information is required on the exam. Individuals should be prepared to present:
If an employer does not have this certification on file, they are subject to heavy fines (max $44,536) as well as the employee who does not have this specific certification. Any required Local, State or Industry licenses do not eliminate the requirement for EPA 608 Technician Certification if you work on refrigerant containing equipment.
The EPA 608 Certification does not expire. If you need to replace your card, visit the EPA website for instructions.
608 Certification Outside of the US:
Rules and guidelines for performing maintenance, service, repair, or disposal of an appliance that contain refrigerant chemicals are global; and therefore, US EPA Technician Certification is recognized internationally.
