Why Should You Take This 60-Hour Michigan Builders Prelicense Online Anytime course?
The first step in getting your Michigan Builders License is completing a State-Approved 60-Hour Prelicense Course. Let us help you every step of the way. This 60-Hour Michigan Builders Prelicense course includes eight (8) separate modules that walk you through all aspects of the building industry, including seven (7) hours on how to bring in clients year round, all while preparing you to pass both parts of the State exam.
Our 60 hour program consists of eight (8) separate modules:
Steps to Obtain Your Michigan Builders License:
Step 1: Complete an approved 60-Hour Builders Prelicense Course and receive Certificates of Completion.
Step 2: Send your license application, Certificates of Completion and $195 fee to the State of Michigan for approval. This usually takes 2-4 weeks.
Step 3: Register with PSI for the State Exam ($111) and pass it on your first try with our 60-Hour Michigan Builders Prelicense course package! There are two parts to the test:
Part 1: Business/Law, 50 questions, you have 75 minutes and must get 36 correct.
Part 2: Trades/Practices, 100 questions, you have 150 minutes and must get 73 correct.
Is the exam open book?
No, the exam is completely closed book. You are only allowed to take silent, battery-operated calculators into the exam. They cannot have a keyboard on them or the ability to convert measurements from inches to feet to yards. We suggest that you take two calculators in case there is a malfunction with one.
Where do I take my exam once my license application has been approved?
PSI Examinations Services has testing centers in Southfield, Lansing (Holt), Grand Rapids, Gaylord and Marquette. You can test out of State at any of the PSI centers, but you would have to submit the Out-Of-State form and make special arrangements. You can get the form from their web site at www.psiexams.com
Will I need to take continued education to keep my license?
Yes. If you were licensed before January 1, 2009, you only need a three hour Code-Law-Safety course once every 3-year licensing cycle. The next renewal date is May 31st, 2014.
If you were licensed January 1, 2009 or after, you must complete 21 hours of continuing competency the first three years of your licensing cycle, and another 21 hours during the second three-year cycle.
What is an M & A Contractor License?
A Maintenance and Alteration (M&A) Contractor License is a license to perform a single trade. You can get an M&A license in any of the 14 trades, like carpentry, roofing, excavation, painting and even swimming pools. It is not a license to "maintain and alter". If you are going to be altering or remodeling homes, you will want the full Residential Builders license, which covers all 14 trades.
Do I have to take the 60 Hour Prelicense Course if I am only going to be doing work in one trade?
Yes, even the M&A Contractors have to complete the whole 60 Hours of builders prelicense education befor applying for the license or registering for the exam. Even if you are only painting or building swimming pools. There are no exceptions.
