The SSPC C3 - Lead Removal Supervisor/Competent Person for Commercial Buildings/Superstructures is a 3rd party certification offered through The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC).
The C3 training contains specific discussions on protecting workers, compliance with environmental regulations, proper management of waste streams, operations that result in potential exposures to lead and other hazards, and associated control technology. It includes background information on the hazards of lead and other toxic metals as well as a review of the current legal and regulatory issues. The course also addresses developing programs to effectively control risks to workers, the public, and the environment, as well as insurance and bonding issues, and an introduction to other safety and health issues that are encountered on painting projects.

- Hazardous coatings and materials in industrial painting
- Legal and regulatory issues
- Health effects of hazardous coatings and materials
- Identification of hazardous coatings/hazardous materials
- Compliance with air, soil, water/sediment, and dust regulations
- Worker protection from hazardous coatings/materials
- Respiratory protection and PPE
- Management of solid and hazardous wastes
- Sources of hazardous coatings exposure
- Control of environmental releases (containment and ventilation)
- Specifications, submittals, and site-specific compliance programs
- Pre-planning and worksite preparation
- Insurance and bonding issues
- In-process and post-competent person (CP) responsibilities/demobilization
There are no pre-requisites for this course or certification. After completion of the training program, the course certification is issued directly from the Society for Protective Coatings.
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THIS CERTIFICATION:
If you wish to perform this work in New Jersey, an additional fee of $110 will be required to supplement the course for NJ licensing purposes, payable on the first day of class. Additionally, a NJ state licensing exam is required after class. Further details will be provided in class on how to get your NJ credentials.
Please note: If you will be performing/supervising lead work on residential properties, a different certification is required with your state. Please view the Lead Abatement Supervisor training courses.
