The mission of the Texas Mold Program is to ensure that persons conducting mold assessment and remediation services in Texas are properly trained and licensed and are following minimum standards that protect the health of workers and building occupants.

They perform this function by administering the Texas Mold Assessment and Remediation Rules (TMARR), which require:

  • Licensing of persons and companies conducting mold assessment and remediation activities
  • Review and approval of mold training programs
  • Receipt of notifications of mold remediation projects
  • Performing inspections of remediation projects

  • Writing mold management plans and mold remediation protocols, including format and contents (including structural components, HVAC systems, and building contents), defining affected areas (including floor plans), identifying and repairing moisture sources and their causes, developing a scope of work analysis, specifying containment and air filtration strategies, determining post-remediation assessment criteria, and clearance criteria; 
  • Post-remediation clearance testing and procedures, including review of mold remediation plans, visual inspections, sampling strategies, and quality assurance

General/Insurance Requirements: 

  • Age requirement: Each individual applying to be licensed or registered under this subchapter must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Office requirement: A person licensed under this subchapter must maintain an office in Texas. An individual employed by a person licensed under this subchapter is considered to maintain an office in Texas through that employer.
  • Insurance requirement: Persons required to have insurance must, at a minimum, obtain policies for commercial general liability insurance in the amount of not less than $1 million per occurrence.

Specific Requirements for Mold Assessment Consultants in the State of Texas:  In addition to the requirements for all applicants listed in §295.305 (relating to Credentials: General Conditions), an applicant must meet at least one of the following education and/or experience requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a natural or physical science, engineering, architecture, building construction, or building sciences, and at least one year of experience in an allied field; OR
  • At least 60 college credit hours with a grade of C or better in the natural sciences, physical sciences, environmental sciences, building sciences, or a field related to any of those sciences, and at least three years of experience in an allied field; OR
  • A high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate and at least five years of experience in an allied field; OR
  • Certification as an industrial hygienist, a professional engineer, a professional registered sanitarian, a certified safety professional, or a registered architect, with at least one year of experience in an allied field.

State Exam Requirements: State Licensing exam is required for Mold Remediation Contractors, Mold Assessment Technicians, and Mold Consultants in the state of Texas

Please Note:  To apply for an assessment or remediation company license, at least one individual within the company has to get licensed first as either a mold assessment consultant or a remediation contractor, respectfully. After your initial training, all licensing paperwork will be processed through the state of Texas:
