This in-depth Fall Protection - 24 Hour EM 385 course is designed for those individuals who will be or are responsible for being a Competent Person, Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO), or are involved with working at heights on an Army Corps of Engineers project or facility as prescribed by EM385-1-1. This training fulfills the SSHO requirement to maintain his/her competency according to EM-385-1-1 Section 01.A.17d. Attendees will learn practical solutions to difficult fall protection problems using appropriate tools and equipment.
This Competent Person training is a pass/fail program incorporating both written and practical examinations and is based on the requirements of the federal regulations and local legislation that will be discussed and reinforced. A 50 question test is provided with the class. Minimum 70% required for passing
Once the course is completed, attendees will be able to prevent fall hazards by utilizing a hierarchy of controls and upon completion will have a clear understanding of:
A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of the program. In order to receive a certificate student must pass the hands-on testing and receive a score of 70% or better on the written test.
Any fall protection equipment that is required will be demonstrated during class; however, students can bring their own personal fall equipment to class for both demonstration and use. Participants will be required participate in Personal Fall Arrest Systems training (hands-on exercises), which may include: inspection procedures, donning procedures, fit test, selection, application and care of equipment.

Day: 1
Title: Regulations & Applications
Terminal Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this training day, the student will identify the applicable requirements and regulations pertaining to USACE Fall Protection. Students will also learn how to develop a fall assessment hazard analysis and the requirements for a USACE Activity Hazard Analysis. This day includes some hands-on class activities and exercises.
Day: 2
Title: Equipment and Rescue
Terminal Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this training day, the student will have the ability to choose the proper fall protection equipment and/or system for their application. Inspect equipment for deficiencies and safe use and create and/or review fall protection rescue plans. This day includes some hands-on class activities and exercises.
Day: 3
Title: WWS Safety
Terminal Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this module, the student will have the knowledge of the requirements for other walking working surfaces and the hazards associated with them. The use and applicability of ladders, stairs, mobile personnel lifting equipment, etc. This day includes some hands-on class activities and exercises along with a content review, hand-on testing and 50 question written test.
