Why Should You Take This 14-Hour FL Contractor License Renewal Package 2 - Weatherization and Renewable Energy Online Anytime Course Package?
For Registered Contractors and Certified Contractors the renewal deadline is August 31st. All Registered Contractors and Certified Contractors are required to complete fourteen (14) hours of continuing education each renewal cycle.
Of the fourteen hours, one hour is required in each of the following topics:
- Specialized or Advanced Module that is approved by the Florida Building Commission,
- Workplace Safety,
- Business Practices,
- Worker’s Compensation,
- Laws and Rules Regulating the Construction Industry,
- Wind Mitigation Methodologies (if license is held in the following category: General, Building, Residential, Roofing, Specialty Structure, or Glass & Glazing.)
Please Note: The remaining seven hours may include any of the above topics or general topics to the industry. Students will have six months of access to course content.

Syllabus
I. Florida Weatherization and Renewable Energy
This seven hour internet video course will explore factors that contribute to exterior shell failure, and identify practical solutions that will preserve the integrity of the building envelope. Participants will gain an awareness of the benefits of solar and wind energy: for residential and commercial use.
Upon completion, participants will have the skills to:
- Understand cause and effect of weatherization problems within the construction industry.
- Understand contractor responsibilities, what to avoid and what to embrace.
- Recognize the cause of most below-grade moisture issues and the remedies that should be taken.
- Recognize the causes of high humidity in homes and how housewraps and flashings work.
- Describe some of the steps and terminology for installing flashings and code minimums.
- Know how to prepare window and door openings for proper installation.
- Recognize the purpose of ventilation and ventilation requirements.
- Understand how a capillary break works with other components to prevent moisture intrusion.
- Be aware of consumer remedies and contractor responsibilities.
- Be able to describe the history of harnessing the wind"s energy.
- Identify the difference between wind energy and conventional energy production.
- Appreciate some of the "Pro vs. Con" debates regarding Green Renewable Wind generated energy.
- Understand what “distributed” wind power really means to home owners, communities and industry.
- Appreciate some of the solutions addressing concerns over the harvesting of wind energy.
- Recognize the concerns of the home owner or small business owner when deciding on whether or not to pursue wind energy.
- Understand the difference between “passive” and “active” solar energy use.
- Know what PV stands for, and how PV solar energy collection varies from traditional solar heat collection.
- Gain an awareness of the benefits of solar energy: for residential and commercial use as well as how solar energy benefits the environment.
- Understand some small business or home owner advantages.
- Realize there is a price to pay for clean, green energy.
- Recognize pros and cons when considering solar.
- Be aware of the history of man harnessing the sun’s energy.
- Know the amount of solar energy versus conventional fuel produced energy in the US.
- Learn some new terms and gain an appreciation for what “green energy” really means.
II. Florida Required Competency
This 6 hour course fulfills the continuing education requirements outlined by 61G4-18.001 for Workplace Safety, Business Practices (Lien Law), Workers’ Compensation, Construction Laws and Rules and Wind Mitigation methodologies. Individual chapter descriptions below outline subjects, topics and subtopics covered.
Upon completion, participants will be knowledgeable in:
- Workplace Safety
- Florida Lien Law
- Workers" Compensation
- Florida Construction Statutes and Rules
- Wind Mitigation
III. Florida Thermal and Moisture Protection: Keeping the Weather Out
This course, based on the 2010 Florida Building codes, pertains to moisture and weather
related problems, and will identify practical solutions based on those requirements. This internet course is intended to provide a minimum of one hour of continuing education to professionals involved in planning, design and construction of structures susceptible to moisture related issues.
Upon completion, participants will have the skills to:
- Summarize the key elements (either natural or mechanical) of a properly ventilated structure.
- List and describe at least three specific installation techniques and/or materials that contribute to a properly constructed roof system.
- Outline at least one design strategy based on "best practices" for the construction of buildings in areas with high humidity.
- Identify and implement proven methods that will effectively divert moisture from the foundation of a structure.
