This 6-Hour Utah Construction Safety Standards Continuing Education Online Anytime Course is a review of the basic components jobsite hazards of residential construction safety,including the responsibilities of employers and employees in establishing safety practices. This course meets the following credit requirements: Contractors – 6 hrs Core; Electricians – 4 hrs Professional; Plumbers – 4 hrs Professional.  You will learn the basic components of construction safety and be able to recognize hazards on a construction job site, as well as ways to prevent those hazards. You will learn the responsibilities of employers and the employees in observing established safety practices.

Learning objectives are provided to facilitate student understanding and progress. Informal progress checks throughout the module help students review and measure their understanding of the material. The chapter final assessment at the end of each chapter accurately reflects the information covered. Students must answer 70% of the questions correctly in order to receive credit/certification for the course.

 

This course meets the following credit requirements:

  • Contractors – 6 hours Core
  • Electricians – 4 hours Professional
  • Plumbers – 4 hours Professional

 

Is Utah contractor continuing education required?

YES! The license you are renewing will dictate the number of continuing education hours required:

Contractors: Six hours each licensing cycle, three of which must be “Core” courses and the other three may be either “Professional” or “Core”. Licensing Cycle ends November 30 of odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…)

Plumbers: Twelve hours of Continuing Education each licensing period. Eight hours must be “Core” education and the remaining four can be “Professional” or “Core” related. Licensing Cycle ends November 30th of even years (2012, 2014, 2016)

Electricians: Sixteen hours of Continuing Education each licensing period. Twelve hours must be “Core” education and the remaining four can be “Professional” or “Core” related Licensing Cycle ends November 30th of even years (2012, 2014, 2016…)

Renewal will be not be permitted until Continuing Education is completed and uploaded to the Utah State registry.

UOSH Introduction

Chapter 1- Personal Protective Equipment

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Describe the causes of the most common workplace injuries 
2) Name the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) most often used to protect workers.

 

Chapter 2- Falls in Construction

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Describe methods of fall protection available to workers. 
2) Explain the main criteria that prompts the use of fall protection for construction workers.

 

Chapter 3- Stairways and Ladders

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Describe safety guidelines and requirements for stairways used at a construction site. 
2) List safe practices and requirements for ladders used at a construction site.

 

Chapter 4- Scaffolds

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Recognize the hazards associated with different types of scaffolds. 
2) Understand the procedures that must be followed in order to control and minimize those hazards.

 

Chapter 5- Excavations

*Learning Objectives: 
1) State the greatest risk that is present at an excavation. 
2) Describe the three primary methods for protecting employees form cave-ins.
3) Name factors that pose a hazard to employees working in excavations, and how to reduce those hazards. 
4) Describe the role of a competent person at an excavation site.

 

Chapter 6- Egress/Fire Protection

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Describe OSHA requirements for proper fire prevention, egress, and equipment. 
2) Be able to create a working emergency action and fire prevention plan.

 

Chapter 7- Hazard Communication

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Identify employer responsibilities towards reducing workplace hazards. 
2) Be familiar with the information provided in Material Safety Data Sheets.

 

Chapter 8- Tool Safety

*Learning Objectives: 
1) Describe the hazards surrounding the use of hand and power tools. 
2) List the important safety tips associated with Powder-Actuated Tools.
3) Explain the basic procedures for safe jack handling.

 

Chapter 9- Materials Handling

*Learning Objective: 
1) Identify, avoid, and control hazardous materials through proper handling, storage, use and disposal.
