This 6-Hour Utah Residential Energy Code and Project Management Continuing Education Online Anytime Course describes building features and equipment systems as they pertain to Utah energy codes, helping you recognize how these codes can reduce and conserve energy consumption. This course meets the following credit requirements: Contractors – 3 hrs Core and 3 hrs Professional; Plumbers – 3 hrs Core and 3 hrs Professional; and Electricians – 6 hrs Professional.

Course describes building features and equipment systems as they pertain to Utah energy codes, and helps recognize how these codes can ultimately reduce and conserve energy consumption. Project Management portion focuses on the primary responsibilities of managing costs, while completing the project to the expected degree of quality.

Each chapter in the course has a short multiple-choice quiz at the end. Passing each quiz moves you onto the next chapter. Our courses do not allow you to fail the quiz. Once you achieve 70% on the quiz, you will move on to the next chapter. 

This course meets the following credit requirements:

• Contractors – 3 hours Core and 3 hours Professional
• Plumbers – 3 hours Core and 3 hours Professional
• Electricians – 6 hours Professional

Energy Codes (3 hours)

Utah has chosen a single family of codes in an attempt to create a consistent set of general building codes. This is the International Code family, which contains the IECC (international Energy Conservation Code). Energy codes are reviewed on a three year cycle, and in October of 2010 the Utah legislature turned down the adoption of the 2009 IECC and remained with the 2006 IECC (with no specific state amendments). All permit holders (builders, remodelers and homeowners) are required to comply. The 2006 IECC sets the baseline for the building envelope, systems, and equipment. This course will describe the details regarding building features and equipment systems as they pertain to Utah energy codes, and help contractors recognize how these codes can ultimately reduce and conserve energy consumption.

Project Management (3 Hours)

This three hour course focuses on the primary responsibilities of a project manager: managing project costs, while completing the project to the expected degree of quality. This requires close attention to detail before beginning actual construction, as well as during the project. Taking proactive measures will help the project manager determine possible obstacles before they occur. This course will analyze all three primary areas. The student will learn how to implement proven methods to manage most effectively.

Learning objectives are provided to facilitate student understanding and progress. Informal progress checks throughout the module help students review and measure their understanding of the material. The final assessment accurately reflects the information covered. Students must answer 70% of the questions correctly in order to receive credit/certification for the course.

Is Utah contractor continuing education required?

Yes. The license you are renewing will dictate the number of continuing education hours required:

Contractors: Six hours each licensing cycle, three of which must be “Core” courses and the other three may be either “Professional” or “Core”. Licensing Cycle ends November 30 of odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…)

Plumbers: Twelve hours of Continuing Education each licensing period. Eight hours must be “Core” education and the remaining four can be “Professional” or “Core” related. Licensing Cycle ends November 30th of even years (2012, 2014, 2016)

Electricians: Sixteen hours of Continuing Education each licensing period. Twelve hours must be “Core” education and the remaining four can be “Professional” or “Core” related Licensing Cycle ends November 30th of even years (2012, 2014, 2016…)

Renewal will be not be permitted until Continuing Education is completed and uploaded to the Utah State registry.
