Why Should You Take This Introduction to Sustainable Sites Webinar?
This is a 1-hour introductory webinar providing an overview of sustainable sites initiatives. It will discuss the importance of choosing an appropriate site location and development style. In terms of site location, the lecture will place an emphasis on minimizing sprawl, protecting virgin land, and encouraging alternative transportation. With regards to development style, the lecture will place an emphasis on erosion and sedimentation control, restoring habitat, practicing storm water management, and reducing light pollution and the urban heat island effect.
Students will be introduced to the topic of why the traditional methods of site selection encourage sprawl, consume virgin land including prime agriculture, and contribute to an overall dependence on cars, especially in the United States. Students will also learn ways that, once a site is selected, project teams can attempt to minimize environmental harms due to development of an individual project.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to analyze the effectiveness of choosing an appropriate location for a new project. They will be able to identify environmental strategies to reduce development impacts during construction and ways to reduce environmental impacts associated with how project teams develop a site.
