How To Become a Lead Inspector or Risk Assessor in Pennsylvania

The state of Pennsylvania requires certification with the state after attending lead paint training.

Company Registration

In addition to complying with the training and individual certification requirements, any company offering to perform lead hazard evaluations in Pennsylvania must also be registered as a Lead Contractor. A $500.00 fee paid out to Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is required with your application. Please send your application and check/money order to the below address:

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector in PA:

  1. The Pennsylvania Lead Inspector performs a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint.
  2. There are no prerequisites for this certification.
  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.
  4. Register for The Exam: Candidates must mail their application to the below address with a non-refundable $50 fee via check or money order made payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

  5. Apply to the PA Department of Labor & Industry for your Lead Inspector certification. Certificates are $200 if the expiration date is greater than six (6) months from the date of application or $100 if the expiration date is six (6) months or less from the date of application. All fees are non-refundable.

Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor in PA:

  1. The Pennsylvania Lead Risk Assessor performs an onsite investigation to determine and report the existence, nature, severity and location of lead hazards in residential dwellings.
  2. Candidates must have a Bachelors degree with 1 year experience in related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work, or construction); OR Associates degree with 2 years experience in a related field; OR High School/GED with 3 years experience in related field.
  3. Successfully complete a Lead Inspector training course. Combo Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor courses are also available.
  4. Attend Lead Risk Assessor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Risk Assessor Refresher course.
  5. Register for The Exam: Candidates must mail their application to the below address with a non-refundable $50 fee via check or money order made payable to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. You must also mail the Verification of Degree for Lead Occupation Certification form and the Verification of Experience for Lead Occupation Certification form.

  6. Apply to the PA Department of Labor & Industry for your Lead Risk Assessor certification. Certificates are $200 if you apply with more than 6 months until the expiration of your training certification or $100 if you apply with less than 6 months until the expiration of your training certification. All fees are non-refundable.
