Steps to Receive Your Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor License in Ohio

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified to properly inspect and risk assess lead in the state of Ohio.

Ohio Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees (see below for more information), any company offering to perform lead hazard abatement in Ohio must also be registered as a Lead Abatement Firm. A $500.00 fee is required - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. The Ohio Lead Inspector performs a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint and the provision of a report explaining the results of the investigation.

  2. There are no prerequisites to become a certified lead inspector.

  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.

  4. Apply online to the ODH (Ohio Department of Health) for your Lead Inspector certification. You can also use the PDF application. There is an $250 non-refundable application fee.


    Applications are generally processed within 2-3 weeks. You will be notified by mail when the program approves your application; you also will be notified if your application is incomplete. You may determine that status of your application by searching your name in the lead database or calling the program at (877) 668- 5323 or (614) 466-1450.


  5. Register for The Exam: Licensure examinations are given at test sites established by the third-party testing provider. Contact the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program at (877) NOTLEAD or (614) 466-1450 to register for the exam. There is a $70 non-refundable fee.

Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor:

  1. The Ohio Lead Risk Assessor performs an on-site investigation to determine the existence, nature, severity and location of lead-based paint hazards, and the provision of a report by the individual or the firm conducting the risk assessment, explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based hazards.

  2. Contractors must meet ONE of the following prerequisites:
    • Be certified, licensed, or registered as an industrial hygienist, engineer, architect, or possess certification in a related field; OR
    • Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years experience in lead, asbestos, other environmental remediation work, or building construction; OR
    • Have an associates degree from an accredited college or university and two years experience in lead, asbestos, other environmental remediation work, or building construction; or OR
    • Have a high school diploma or equivalent and three years experience in lead, asbestos, other environmental remediation or building construction.
  3. Attend Lead Risk Assessor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Risk Assessor Refresher course.
